Routine Check-Ups
Regular wellness exams are a very important part of your pets’ health. The American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) recommends annual wellness exams at a minimum and as your pet ages they recommend an increase in frequency of visits. A physical exam includes the veterinarian evaluating a number of organ systems (i.e. Heart and Lungs, Eyes and Ears, Teeth, Gums and oral cavity, Lymph Nodes, Skin and Coat and Abdomen palpation). We believe strongly in wellness care and have developed protocols for every life stage.
One of the most important reasons to bring your pet in for a physical exam is to diagnose and treat a problem before it worsens or may become untreatable. Because pets aren’t able to vocalize how they feel, illness may be present for a long time before you are aware of the symptoms.
Oral & Dental Care
Your pet’s dental health is a very important part of your pet’s overall health. Oral disease is the most commonly diagnosed health problem in pets. According to the American Veterinary Dental Society 80% of dogs and 70% of cats have some kind of oral disease by the age of 3. Dental disease is often an unrecognized source of pain in dogs.
Signs of Oral Disease include:
- Bad breath
- Tartar build up
- Changes in eating an chewing habits
- Red or swollen gums
- Pawing or rubbing face
- Generalized depression
**If you are concerned that your pet is exhibiting any of these signs of oral or dental disease please call us to schedule a free dental evaluation. The dental evaluation is performed by a registered veterinary technician or veterinarian and will grade the degree of dental and periodontal disease and recommend a treatment plan.
Pain Management & Hospice Care
Preventing your pet’s pain and suffering are of the utmost importance at The Pet Clinic of Urbana. Many animals will instinctively hide their pain as a survival mechanism which in the past has led to incorrect assumptions about the ability of dogs and cats to feel pain.
Pain management has become an important issue in veterinary medicine. The American Association of Animal Hospitals have recently released the AAHA/AAFP guidelines for pain management in dogs. These guidelines show that pain managment helps improve the recovery process, whether from illness, surgery or injury. Because it reduces stress and increases a sense of well being, pain management may even help your pet live longer.
Signs that your pet may be in pain include:
- Depression or Inactivity
- Slow to rise or collapsing when lying down
- Standing or sitting in unusual positions
- Trembling or Shaking
- Walking with a stiff gait
- Whining, howling, wimpering or constant meowing
- Constant licking or chewing at a particular body part
- Inappropriate elimination
- Unable to get comfortable and heavy panting
- Changes in behavior (aggression or submissiveness)

Microchipping
Did you know?
- Getting lost is the #1 cause of death for pets
- 1 in 3 pets goes missing during its lifetime
- Without ID, 90% of pets never return home
Protect your pet by getting them microchipped. Microchipping provides the peace of mind that you’ve given your pet the permanent, lifetime ID he/she needs for the best chance to come home.
Microchipping is safe, easy, inexpensive and practically painless. The microchip is the size of a grain of rice and is inserted with a simple injection under the skin. If your pet is lost, almost any shelter or veterinary office can scan your pet using a microchip reader and detect if your pet has a microchip. Then by calling the microchip company that houses the client information database, you can be contacted and reunited with your pet.
A microchip may be the most important gift you every give your pet.

he Pet Clinic of Urbana is proud to offer state-of-the-art complete digital radiography. This enables us to take and process radiographs quickly and efficiently, as well as save and store images for easy reference. We can also share images with referral partners to provide the best continuity of care for our patients.
Areas we frequently examine:
- Extremities (Limbs)– to diagnosis causes for lameness such as bone fracture, joint luxation or soft tissue injury, or cancer Thoracic cavity- to evaluate cardiac or lung/airway disease.
- Abdominal Cavity– to evaluate organ enlargement (Liver, Kidneys, Stomach, Intestines, Bladder), Bladder and Kidney stones or abdominal masses
- Spine (Cervical, Thoracic, Lumbar)– to evaluate for alignment, cancer, arthritis
- Hips– to evaluate for dysplasia, osteoarthritis, subluxation or fracture

Even though we do not perform orthopedic surgical procedures at our clinic we frequently send image studies of our patients with our clients or directly to referral hospitals. This saves the pet owner time and money and enables the pet to have the needed surgical procedure as soon as possible.
Ultrasound
The ultrasound gives our veterinarians a unique ability to gather medical information unmatched by any other modality. This painless and non-invasive instrument enables us to see into the abdominal or thoracic cavity to evaluate organ texture, size and location and to identify free fluid.
We use our ultrasound every day to obtain urine samples sterilely through cystocentesis. We evaluate the size and texture of the bladder wall and lumen and screen for bladder stones and masses.
We have several package options for Ultrasonography:
- FAST Ultrasound– this enable us to quickly use the ultrasound to rule out bleeding in the trauma patient
- System Specific Ultrasound– we use this for certain organ systems, such as urinary bladder and kidneys or the liver
- Pregnancy Ultrasound– to evaluate the viability of puppies
- Full Abdominal Ultrasound– evaluates the abdominal organs (liver, kidneys, stomach, intestines, and urinary bladder)
In-House Laboratory
We have a complete In-house laboratory that enables us to run bloodwork, urinalysis and fecal tests every day.
We use the most up to date IDEXX equipment for our in-house and reference laboratory.
Tests we commonly run in-house include:
- CBC
- cPL (pancreatitis)
- Chemistry (10 and 17)
- ProBNP (cardiac)
- Electrolytes
- Urinalysis (urine)
- Total T4 (thyroid)
- Fecal Cytology
- SDMA (early kidney)
- Parvovirus Test
- 4DX HWT (heartworm and tick disease)
